How NARMA™ Treats

Addiction & Alcoholism

NARMA™, exclusively at Grata House, focuses on the mechanisms of addiction that complements our existing behavioral and cognitive therapies and case management practices by working intensely at the root of harmful addictive behaviors, expanding core capacities, cultivating aliveness, developing positive outcomes, and securing lasting sobriety.

What NARMA™ Treats

Addiction-focused NARMA™ addresses compulsive behaviors in individuals who lack insight into their alcoholism or addictive behaviors or have no desire to change their addictive behaviors, as well as individuals with numerous rehabilitation treatment failures and treatment-resistant addiction/alcoholism. NARMA™ has also effectively treated clients in the outpatient with many years of sobriety from narcotics and alcohol, which still lack the skills to soothe themselves and struggle with depression, anxiety, and interpersonal relationships.

Core Treatment

Components

The Framework of NueroAffective Relational Model – Addiction Focused (NARMA™) feels a bit different from some other clinical approaches to treating Addiction and Alcoholism:

  • Instead of focusing on the past, NARMA™ focuses on the present moment. As we are “triggered” in real-time and lose autonomy over thoughts and behavior, the clinician and client explore on a level playing field with deep curiosity and connectedness “what’s happening” beyond natural defenses, “efforting,” denial, dissociation, intellectualization, or thoughts. NARMA™ promotes agency and aligns with the rational adult, not the “triggered” regressed response.
  • Instead of focusing on the narratives around attachment issues, such as, “I feel this way because my parent never treated me the way they should have,” NARMA™ focuses on how we adapt to the wound—for example, focusing on the fight or flight response of being rejected.
  • Rather than goal-driven or strategic, NARMA™ is inquiry-driven and based on curiosity. The primary function of NARMA™ trained clinicians at Grata House is to explore the parts of self that adaptively cope with unmet needs and lack of deep connectedness with self and others.
  • Instead of reducing compulsive urges, NARMA™prioritizes addressing the underlying patterns that lead to the symptoms.
  • NARMA™ is client-driven as opposed to therapist driven. The therapist provides opportunities for exploration instead of the client following their lead.
