Awaken to Gratitude

Mornings at Grata House are relaxing and soothing. I take time for myself. I also have some Holistic options such as a sauna, Ice plunge, or to just simply relax with a cup of coffee or tea. 

I set my intention for the day as I wake up my body
and mind.

Our chef is amazing! Not only is their food creative, delicious, and nurturing, They are just an amazing soul. A great way to fuel up and begin my day.

Meeting with my Primary Therapist

I’m one-on-one with my Primary Therapist. I was terrified coming into treatment, but now I’m experiencing hope due to the  compassion my therapist has shown me.

Being witnessed without judgment and being given the support and tools to be effective in maintaining abstinence is something I’m open to for the first time.

I choose to journal as I stay at Grata House. I take a quick break in my private room to add an entry after seeing my Primary Therapist

Although some days I may just opt for a cup of coffee during this time.

DBT (Dialectic Behavioral Therapy for Substance Dependence)

I looked at my schedule and was curious what DBT actually means. The group facilitator used accessible and eye opening language to help me improve the way I talk to myself and to not judge myself for my impulsive behaviors. I’m now gaining the skills to tolerate day-to-day stress more effectively and cope in a positive way.

Honestly for a guy who struggles to ask for help or support, this group empowers me to be boldly vulnerable. The DBT Mindfulness practice centers my head in the present moment and disconnects my mind from overwhelming thoughts. The facilitator makes room for me to be who I am. It’s in that space of connection, respect and trust. I begin to open my heart to support, care and my core values.

Case Management

“My routine saves my life” says my Clinical Case Manager. I’m starting to believe that. He’s been there before himself, so he knows what he’s talking about. 

He helps me to bring things outside of Grata house into clear focus. We meet and assess what’s working in my life and what I’d like to change. Part of our the process has been creating objectives that help me work towards my goals.

The Work

In my NARM Therapy (Neuroaffective Relational Model) sessions I work on the relationship I have with myself and how I feel. I’m learning about how I regulate my emotions when I used alcohol, sedatives or stimulants as a short-term solution. Now, I’m breaking through into new states of awareness and feeling that far surpass anything I’ve ever experienced. I think I’m actually open to being sober.

Eat and Relax

Our chef delivers once again, with another amazing gourmet meal. After all that hard work it’s such a sweet reward to sit with my fellow travelers and have a wonderful healthy meal that allows us to regroup, share stories, and recharge before going into the second half of our treatment day.

“…made it a space of non-judgment where everyone was free to be heard and witnessed in their feelings.”

There’s a lot of things that are unsettled with my family, so naturally I was nervous about meeting with my loved ones. My Primary therapist led our family session.

It went Incredibly smooth as my primary therapist skillfully made it a space of non-judgment where everyone was free to be heard and witnessed in their feelings.

This session opened my eyes to how much my family cares about me and how I want to be present for my life so that I can connect with them.

A highlight in my day is the Healing Session with Grata’s Holistic specialists. It’s time to be nurtured with Myofascial Release, Massage, or Somatic Experiencing Bodywork. Post session I overflow with new vitality and positive energy!

I attend my personal training session with Grata’s Certified Personal Trainer. Ari helps support me in my healing journey as I regain my physical strength.

Getting into Grata’s on-site fitness center nourishes and restores my body. It’s my amends to myself, as I’m learning to tolerate treating myself better.

We wrap up a 60 minute on-site talk with world famous addiction and trauma author and Grata Ranch Senior Fellow Dr. Laurence Heller, Ph.D. We’re all reading his book Healing Developmental Trauma.

My peers and I discuss addiction and relationships issues with a true master, teaching us to have compassion for ourselves and giving us practical suggestions to help us change our behaviors. This is what makes Grata a special place.

My day comes to an end as I go out and relax in the sauna followed by a dip in the pool. I reflect on where I was not long ago–scared unwilling to leave my hotel to fly to California to check-in to Grata House.

For the first time, I know my reasons for being here and I’m ready and willing to try something new.
