Awaken to Gratitude

Mornings at Grata are relaxing and soothing. I take time for myself. I also have some Holistic options such as a sauna, Ice plunge, or to just simply relax with a cup of coffee or tea. 

I set my intention for the day as I wake up my body
and mind.

Our chef is amazing! Not only is their food creative, delicious, and nurturing, They are just an amazing soul. A great way to fuel up and begin my day.

Meeting With Primary Therapist At Grata House

Daily Intentions Meeting

Starting the day with purpose makes all the difference. Our group facilitator guides us through setting meaningful intentions for the day ahead. We share our goals and support each other in a space of complete acceptance.

Being able to vocalize what I want to accomplish helps me stay focused and accountable throughout my time here. The encouragement from both staff and peers reminds me I’m not alone in this journey.

Outdoor Holistic Activity

Today we’re hiking in the beautiful natural surroundings of Grata. Our adventure therapy guide explains how these outdoor experiences help develop self-efficacy and a growth mindset. The fresh air and natural light instantly boost my mood and reduce stress.

Other days we might try surfing or paddleboarding, which our therapists explain stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and creates calming brainwave patterns. I’m discovering how these experiential wellness activities are an essential part of my healing journey, fostering emotional resilience while strengthening my body.

“My routine saves my life” says my Clinical Case Manager. I’m starting to believe that. He’s been there before himself, so he knows what he’s talking about. 

He helps me to bring things outside of Grata into clear focus. We meet and assess what’s working in my life and what I’d like to change. Part of our the process has been creating objectives that help me work towards my goals.

I’m one-on-one with my Primary Therapist. I was terrified coming into treatment, but now I’m experiencing hope due to the compassion my therapist has shown me.

Today we’re working on my relationship with myself and how I process emotions. I’m learning about how I used to regulate my feelings with substances as a short-term solution. Now, I’m breaking through into new states of awareness that far surpass anything I’ve ever experienced.

Eat and Relax

Our chef delivers once again, with another amazing gourmet meal. After all that hard work it’s such a sweet reward to sit with my fellow travelers and have a wonderful healthy meal that allows us to regroup, share stories, and recharge before going into the second half of our treatment day.

Case Management

Getting into Grata’s on-site fitness center nourishes and restores my body. It’s my amends to myself, as I’m learning to tolerate treating myself better.

Relax

Time to unwind and process the day. Sometimes I choose to journal in my private room, other times I might take a dip in the pool or use the sauna. This protected time for self-care is teaching me healthy ways to decompress without substances.

I’m discovering that giving myself permission to rest and recuperate is not a luxury but a necessity for maintaining my well-being and recovery.

We wrap up a 60 minute on-site talk about the book Healing Developmental Trauma from world famous addiction and trauma author Dr. Laurence Heller, Ph.D. We’re all reading his book.

My peers and I discuss addiction and relationships issues described in this book, teaching us to have compassion for ourselves and giving us practical suggestions to help us change our behaviors. This is what makes Grata a special place.

My day comes to an end as I go out and relax in the sauna followed by a dip in the pool. I reflect on where I was not long ago–scared unwilling to leave my hotel to fly to California to check-in to Grata.

For the first time, I know my reasons for being here and I’m ready and willing to try something new.
